At just 19 years of age, Bryan Smits is about to experience one of the highlights of his season: his participation in the European Young Riders Championships in July, riding for the Swiss team. A crowning achievement for this passionate and ambitious rider, who is patiently building a solid path towards top-level sport.
Season 2025 didn't get off to as smooth a start as its predecessor. Bryan explains:
"I sold two good horses I had last year. Today, I have some very good new horses, but they're still young in my system. I think it's mainly in the second half of the season that they'll come into their own.
Despite everything, the results are there, and the progress continues: "They're already showing me some great things.
His selection for the Swiss national team is a highlight. "It's a real consecration. It's proof that we've been working in the right direction. Now the goal is to put all that hard work into practice."
The desire to win a collective medal is very much present: "I'd really like to bring something back for Switzerland. Last year we were very close, but this time I hope it will be the right one.
A keen sportsman, Bryan has no special program in mind: "I love sport, I practice several disciplines. I just want to stay fit, keep a good mental attitude and continue to live my life in a balanced way."
On the mental side, he plans to consult a coach to fine-tune certain points. But the essentials of his preparation are already in place: "We think about this kind of event all year round. It's a permanent objective, as much for us as for the horses.
For his horse, the idea is clear: "Keep him happy, keep walking him, work on his strengths without forcing his weaknesses."
Bryan rides in a family environment. His father, Edwin Smits, is his main trainer, although he remains very busy with other riders. "When he sees that everything's working, he gives me some autonomy. If there are points to correct, we work together."
A relationship of trust, based on exchange, and great attention paid to the relationship with his horses: "That's the most important thing for me, spending time with them, feeling how they're doing."
In addition to the European Championships, Bryan has his sights set on several key milestones:
But beyond the results, Bryan sees further ahead: "The most important thing for me is to build a solid foundation. Training horses, taking them as high as possible, with passion."
